For more than forty years, UHAB has provided technical assistance, training, and services for Housing Development Fund Corporation (HDFC) cooperatives throughout New York City. UHAB partners with CNYC to offer a special workshop track for HDFCs at the Annual Housing Conference. Note that these classes satisfy the Regulatory Agreement requirement for education and training.

The HDFC workshops are:

6. Ask UHAB: Healthy Governance and Financial Success for your HDFC (Morning session)

Managing and maintaining a successful HDFC co-op takes time, effort, and commitment. In this interactive class, UHAB staff members will discuss issues your limited-equity HDFC co-op may be facing related to matters of governance of the co-op and towards the financial health of your co-op. Topics will include accountability, communication between the board and shareholders and conducting a financial assessment of your HDFC co-op.

106. Increase Participation and Avoid Burnout in your Co-op! (Midday Session)

In this interactive class, UHAB staff members will discuss a matter important to any co-op whether HDFC co-ops or other co-ops: how to encourage every member of the co-op to participate.

Topics that will be addressed include strategies to get shareholders involved in the co-op, how to establish effective committees to handle co-op management and duties, annual elections and training new board members, and tips to prep for and hold effective meetings that emphasize communication, transparency, community building and decision-making.

206. Impact of New HPD Regulations on HDFC Resales (Afternoon Session)

Attorneys Lawrence McGaughey and Brooklyn Law School professor Debra Bechtel will review the new HPD proposed requirements and property tax exemption that seek to ensure that hundreds of HDFCs provide permanently affordable housing.  They will discuss developments to date and will offer practical suggestions for HDFCs regarding whether and how this would require major changes in past policies.
